Day 1: First up I was interviewed by the lovely Olesya Okuneva for World Fashion Channel about my look.

In September 2018, I had the opportunity to work as the Paris correspondent for Emmy nominated Fashion News Live seen globally on Amazon Prime. It was an intense, amazing and surreal experience to witness all the amazing shows while sitting front row, getting backstage access and exclusive interviews with brilliant designers from around the world.

Here are some highlights.

Women who Run with the Wolves

FASHION & LIFESTYLE - Zara Durrani - March 11, 2018

Processed with VSCO with 7 preset

It is worse to stay where one does not belong at all than to wander about lost for a while and looking for the psychic and soulful kinship one requires.

Excerpt from Women who run with the Wolves

Today my friend Evie who is visiting from London gifted me this beautiful book, Women who run with the wolves. It’s been on my reading list for quite some time. I’ve only read the first two pages so far but connect with what is written so much that I felt compelled to share this bit from the book.

Missing Summertime

Missing Summertime

This is pretty much how I spent my summer, in the park, alone and often with friends. Picnics alone on a hot day can do wonders for your soul. Vancouver’s beauty shines bright as the days grow longer, and the mood of the city changes from gloomy grey days spent alone to days in parks, admiring Mother Nature.

Airport Style – Traveling to Europe

FASHION & LIFESTYLE, TRAVEL - Zara Durrani - December 13, 2017

Airport Style

So this is what I wore for my recent trip to Paris. I’m a budget traveler, and I found a great deal, with a four hour layover enroute to Charles Du Gaulle. And a direct flight back on my way to Vancouver (where I’m based) flying Delta.

I skipped jeans, and very Vancouverite of me to opt for my new Aritzia Tna mid rise black tights, which pretty much looked like pants in my defence. And I wore a fabulous score from a movie set sale, a Club Monaco coat.

I flew for about 16 hours, from Vancouver to Minneapolis, and then finally to Paris. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful the MSP airport was, and if you need a minor chiro adjustment, there’s a chiropractor available! How cool.

After finally arriving in Paris it took about 3 hours in the lineup to clear customs. Who knew there would be a massive lineup at 7 am!

I was so grateful to be wearing something comfortable and chic. However, my little booties from H&M were making me dream of walking barefoot.

So if you’re reading this, and have an international long flight ahead of you, I recommend getting into your most comfortable pants and shoes. But not PJs! It’s been said in many articles written by flight attendants, you do get treated better based on what you’re wearing.

There have been passengers who weren’t allowed to board for wearing denim cutoff shorts on a domestic flight in the US.

One of the lessons, I learnt from this trip was to not wear brand new shoes on a long flight. They may be comfortable for an hour or so, but if you have to go from one end of the airport to the other, or in my case at Charles Du Galle, wait for 3 hours to finally collect baggage, maybe wear flat boots, or sneakers instead.

My Top Fall Fashion Trends

FASHION & LIFESTYLE - Zara Durrani - October 26, 2017

Fall Fashion Trends

It’s hard to see hot summer days go and say goodbye to shorts and bikini weather. Being born in summer in a hot country (Pakistan) where summertime temperatures like 40-45 C is considered quite normal, i’m quite partial to worshipping and chasing the sun. But fall is quite an otherworldly spectacle specially in Vancouver where we get to witness in awe mother nature paint our city into a myriad of delicious warm hues. Gold, crimson, burgundy, mustard trees remind us the beauty of impermanence. We certainly wouldn’t appreciate summer if there was no winter.

Here are my top trends for Fall Fashion. PS for makeup eyeliner is in, whether you like a full on cat eye, or just a little winged liner. I’ve always been a big fan of subtly accentuating your eyes paired with a bronzed face and a nude lip. You can never go wrong with that, whether it’s for red carpet or office.

For this look I wanted to mix patterns with stripes. These pants from ZARA have been the it look for many bloggers as you may have seen on instagram. Instead of opting for the matching blazer i decided to mix up the look with a floral patterned kimono with gorgeous fringe, which adds a bit of regal vibe to the look.

Both pants and fringe kimono are from Zara. The top is a vintage find.

Save the animals, opt for faux fur. Glad to see Gucci is finally making some changes and saying no to fur. I have atleast 10 faux fur coats in various colors and styles. And i don’t wait for the weekend to pull out my fabulous faux fur, daytime glam is a thing. During my recent trip to Europe i was rocking my faux fur coat from H&M while wandering the streets of Paris and London.

This stunning emerald green dress is from Zara.

Coat is a vintage find.

I’m quite happy with how this look turned out. Perfect street style glam look that can be taken into a girl’s night out or to a date. All the stores are filled with many styles of kimonos so shouldn’t be hard to find one that matches your personality. No i don’t keep shopping at ZARA because we have the same names but i loved their fall collection. This kimono robe with its faux fur cuff details, soft pink and floral patterns won my heart. Definitely a statement piece.

To make the look more relaxed for daytime i paired it with jeans and tee, and cute cherry red beret!

Fell in love with this delicious bright warm fall sweater from H & M. I wore it to brunch with a pair of faux leather tights and kept getting asked about my outfit. If you live in London or Vancouver where it tends to be predominantly grey over winter, it’s a nice way to brighten up the day by wearing color. Some call it color therapy. So ditch your grey and black sweater be bold this winter.

How to Pack for Europe

FASHION & LIFESTYLE, TRAVEL - Zara Durrani - September 28, 2017

Packing to Europe

Pack for Europe, Packing your entire life in a suitcase for a two week get away can be a daunting task. Even more so, when you know you will be shooting in some of the most iconic sites in Paris and London. I have myself permission to buy a carryon suitcase once in Paris. Let’s be realistic, Paris is any fashionista’s ultimate fantasy, and the architecture making an amazing backdrop for the photos. One of my friends asked me, do people really come back after they leave for Paris. Good point!

I started putting outfits away a few weeks back out of sheer excitement. Normally, I am the eleventh hour packer but for all the shoots planned in Paris and London some prep is needed. I’m actually decided to try the looks beforehand just to save space and to only bring clothes I’m actually going to wear. Here are some of my top tips for packing for a trip to Europe in Fall.

1- Suitcase

After years with my beloved old school suitcase, whose wheels barely anymore – and the poor thing has been everywhere with me from Bali to Santa Fe. One can get attached to suitcases, the airports, the memories. Sorry love, time to trade you in for a newer model!

So I decided to purchase a new hard covered expandable suitcase with 8 spinner wheels. As I will be going from Paris to Barcelona to London then back to Paris. I shopped for my suitcase at Winners as they carry a wide assortment of designers luggage (that is not just black or grey). Considering my shopping habits, expandable I opted for an expandable suitcase, that has hard cover but also ultra light weight. That is an important point since I’ll be shopping, and if you’re like me you want to be mindful of how much your suitcase minus the clothes weighs. And flying between Europe airline carriers charge extra for medium to extra large suitcases.

2- Weather Appropriate

I know you must be excited for your upcoming trip. But friend, don’t forget to check the weather! I know this is something very easily forgotten while trying to leave your apartment in order, packing, finishing work commitments etc. Last night before my final packing, i double checked the weather for the three cities I will be visit, Paris, Barcelona and London. As we know London, is more grey then Raincouver (Vancouver). So pack an umbrella, unlike me! I have a collection of umbrellas at home from lace frilly ones, to small ones from hotels … and I completely forgot to put one in my suitcase. I’m sitting at Minneapolis airport as I write this, I’ll find to go searching for one here. I like being prepared for all situations!

As i’m going to three countries, with different climates so layers are important. Friends that are in Paris right now mentioned it’s been warm enough to wear a dress, but on some days temperature drop down to 7C. Very bipolar weather so better to be prepared with coats, scarves, sweaters etc.

I packed in some short dresses and skirts last night and a pair of black tights to go with them. Very chic Parisian look if i must say so myself!

3- Shoes

No you cannot wander around  Versailles and Louvre and all over Barcelona in a pair of stilettoes no matter how gorgeous they look. Okay maybe you can, but I can’t anymore. So yesterday I purchased a modest 3 inch heel black ankle boot from H&M. I have been wearing them at the airport, they go great with my all black outfit today and are easy to slip on and off for customs. The goal is to look fab and effortless and be comfortable. Yes it is possible.

I have also packed a pair of freshly washed slip on white converse, a cute pair or skin tone brown round toe heels. I like the idea of having a pair of neutral heels as they are versatile and will pop out with any outfit, whether skinny jeans or a red gown (which I have packed as well, one has to be prepared my friend).

4- Jackets

Wear your heaviest jacket, then it’s on you and keeping you warm during the long flight. I have packed two faux fur jacket one is beige and the other white. I know they look sort of similar but not quite. I justify packing them both because I want to be photographed in them in Paris. At the airport I decided to wear my Club Monaco wool coat with baby calf lining on the outside. It is tres chic!

5- Hats

Hats are a fantastic way to accessorize and add some panache to your outfit. I’m packing three different berets in my suitcase, a paperboy cap, Brooklyn toque and LA cap! Okay a little obsessive with hats.  I feel it’s a great way to pull an outfit together and add your personality to your look.

Bon voyage! And remember not all those who wander all lost.

Dreaming of Paris

FASHION & LIFESTYLE - Zara Durrani - September 24, 2017

Dreaming of Paris

Whilst having lunch with a friend this afternoon, who just got back London Fashion Week the topic of traveling, specifically wanderlust came up. Why is it that some folks are content with never leaving the city they grew up, while others go searching the world – is it happiness we are after, or understanding the meaning of life, are finding connection with strangers. I turned 35 last month, and 4 months to date my mother passed away from Oral Cancer. I sense something inside of me has shifted since her passing. Not quite sure how to describe it, other than the fact I have this strong desire to live more passionately and intensely than before. To see the world, to visit places, countries she never got a chance to go to (France, Italy).

One of my dreams is to live in Paris for a few months and study French. So, last week I started looking up schools in Paris that could take me in early spring. My logical brain was telling me I should be moving to Los Angeles for that time, but my heart and soul were pointing to France. And I guess that is the artist’s way – to follow the heart, even when it desires crazy things.

When I was in Santa Monica in June, someone stopped me at Dogtown coffee to ask if i was Parisian. This happens to me quite often. Perhaps in a different life I lived in France, who knows.

Paris Fashion Week is always a Good Idea

FASHION & LIFESTYLE, TRAVEL - Zara Durrani - September 24, 2017

Paris Fashion

Paris Fashion Week is around the corner and I started packing my suitcase two weeks ago out of excitement. Even though I will be catching the tail end of it. This trip was more planned to visit Paris rather than fashion week, but I am beyond thrilled to attend some shows and enjoy the city of love and lights.

Last year after a week in Brussels I made it to Paris for only 24 hours and it was so hard to leave, believe you me. It is all the poets and romantics rave about and much more.

I’m a summer baby through and through, but fall gets me very excited each year. I get to take out my hat and coat collection.  Not quite sure how I will pack my entire life into one suitcase. Weather wise I’ve been told to bring my winter coats and layer up in Paris. And then I’m heading to warm Barcelona which is estimated to be around highs of 27 C.  After Barcelona I’m flying to London to see some college friends I haven’t seen in two decades. Honestly, I feel i need at least a week minimum in each city but two weeks is better than nothing.

Believe it or not, one of my hobbies or actual obsessions is to look for flights (deals) on the internet. Everyday i look for flights to my favourite destinations and day dream. I’m already planning a trip to Thailand or Singapore for November/December. Or I could head back to Europe for the holidays. One of my besties is moving to Lyon to study and we haven’t seen each other in years, but still remain in touch. Great excuse to visit France again. Anything could happen.
